You Are The Light

 

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

 

Grammar

 

• You are the light of the world.
  • “무엇을”은 이 문장에서 (    무엇이다          ).
  • The light … 은 너에 대한 설명
  • Be동사 다음에 “무엇을”에 해당하는 말은 두 가지.
    • 명사로 표현되는 경우 (  무엇이다       )
    • 형용사로 표현되는 경우 (    어떠하다      )

 

• A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
  • 첫 문장
    • “Set on a hill”
      • 수식하는 말로 쓰일 수 있는 분사 (여기는 과거분사)
        • 수식어(modifier)로 쓰일 수 있는 것들
          • 구: 형용사, 전치사구, 분사(구), 명사(?)
          • 절: 관계절
      • “On a hill”   — “갈보리 산 위에 십자가 섰으니”
    • Cannot be hidden
      • 수동태: 이 경우는 주체가 명확하지 않은 경우 (by any means)
  • 둘째 문장
    • Nor: and ~ not  
    • 주어와 동사의 어순 변경때, 주동사가 일반동사인 경우에는 do를 사용
    • but: 이후에 동일한 요소들은 생략가능
    • to all
    • all in the house: “in the house” 수식어 

 

• In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 
  • In the same way … others,
    • In the same way: 부사의 의미의 전치사구
    • “Let your light shine before others”
      • Let: 목적어를 ~하게 하다.
  • So that they may …
    • So that ~ may ~ : 목적을 의미하는 절을 이끄는 접속사
    • And: 인과관계의 의미
    • Father who is heaven: 관계절

  • 1단계: 저는 말씀드릴 수 있는 기회를 감사드립니다: I thank you for the opportunity to tell you my experience.
  • 2단계: 무슨 경험?   the opportunity of resolving the problems
  • 3단계: 무슨 문제들? the problems which made my life difficult for the last 10 years.  
  • 최종: I thank you for the opportunity to tell you my experience of resolving the problems which made my life difficult for the last 10 years. 

 

• 당신을 진정으로 사랑하는 사람들이 당신의 삶에 가장 큰 영향을 미치도록 하세요. 
  • 1단계: 사람들이 당신의 삶에 영향을 미치도록 하세요. Let people influence on your life.
  • 2단계: 어떤 사람들? 당신을 진정으로 사랑하는 사람들. people who truly love you. 
  • 최종: Let people who truly love you influence on your life. 

 

• 당신이 부인에게 진심어린 사과를 해서 그녀가 가슴 속에 품고 있는 아픔을 해소할 수 있도록 도와 주십시오.
  • 1단계: 당신이 부인에게 진심어린 사과를 해라 Make a heartfelt apology to your wife
  • 2단계: 그녀가 아픔을 해소할 수 있도록 도와 주라: help her to release the hurt in her heart.
  • 3단계: … 사과를 해서 … 하도록 도와주라. ~ and ~ 또는 so that
  • 최종: 
    • Make a heartfelt apology to your wife, and help her to release the hurt in her heart.
    • Make …. your wife so that she may release the hurt in her heart.

 

• 크리스챤들이 예수의 뒤를 따라 선을 행해야 하는데 그것은 예수 그리스도의 복음이 전해지고 그 복음을 통해 사람들이 구원을 얻을 수 있게 하기 위해서입니다.
  • 1단계: 크리스챤들이 …. 해야 한다. Christians should do good works following the example of Jesus
  • 2단계: 예수 그리스도의 복음이 …. 얻을 수 있다.  the gospel of Jesus Christ may be spread and by the gospel people may be saved. 
  • 최종: ~ 하기 위해서 이다 (so that을 이용). Christians should do good works following the example of Jesus so that the gospel of Jesus Christ may be spread and by the gospel people may be saved.

 

• 크리스챤은 예수 그리스도가 삶과 죽음 그리고 부활로 증거한 복음을 받아들이고 영적으로 거듭나서 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 따르는 삶을 사는 사람입니다. 그래서 크리스챤의 삶을 사는 것은 말할 것도 없고 크리스챤이 되는 것도 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 그 어려움에도 불구하고 참된 크리스챤이 그런 삶을 살 수 있는 이유는 천국에 대한 소망 때문입니다. 천국을 바라보고 이생의 유혹을 이겨내며 선을 행하며 사는 것을, 믿음이라고 하는데, 그래서 믿음으로 구원을 얻는다고 성경은 말하는 것입니다. 
  • 크리스챤은 예수 그리스도가 삶과 죽음 그리고 부활로 증거한 복음을 받아들이고 영적으로 거듭나서 예수 그리스도의 가르침을 따르는 삶을 사는 사람입니다.
    • Christian is a person, who accepts the gospel Jesus Christ witnessed by his life, death, and resurrection and live a life following his teaching.
  • 그래서 크리스챤의 삶을 사는 것은 말할 것도 없고 크리스챤이 되는 것도 결코 쉽지 않습니다.
    • It is not easy not only to live as a Christian but also to become one (=a Christian).
  •  그 어려움에도 불구하고 참된 크리스챤이 그런 삶을 살 수 있는 이유는 천국에 대한 소망 때문입니다.
    • Even with (=Despite) the difficulty, a true Christian can live such a life for the hope of heaven. 
  • 천국을 바라보고 이생의 유혹을 이겨내며 선을 행하며 사는 것을, 믿음이라고 하는데, 그래서 믿음으로 구원을 얻는다고 성경은 말하는 것입니다.
    • It is faith to live overcoming temptations and doing good works in this life for the hope of heaven, and the Bible says, people are saved by the faith. 
  • 전체문장은 따라서 ...: 
    • Christian is a person, who accepts the gospel Jesus Christ witnessed by his life, death, and resurrection and lives a life following His teaching. It is not easy not only to live as a Christian but also to become one. Despite the difficulty, a true Christian lives such a life for the hope of heaven. It is faith to live overcoming temptations and doing good works in this life for the hope of heaven, and the Bible says, one is saved by the faith.
