Forgiveness and Faith

15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17“Say to Joseph, ‘Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” (Genesis 50:15-21, ESV).

Grammar

1. Words and Expressions

   1. Pay back for (v. 15)

      1. 무엇에 대해 되갚다/원수갚다

      2. 예: He paid her back for her hatred with kindness.

   2. It may be that … (v. 15) 

      1. 그럴지도 모른다 (=It is possible that …)

      2. 예: It may be (=is possible) that God is walking with His children everyday. 

   3. Fall down before (v. 18)

      1. 누구 앞에 (절하여) 엎드리다

      2. 예: In the dream, Jesus appeared to me and I fell down before Him.

   4. In the place of (v. 19)

      1. 무엇 대신에 (=instead of)

      2. 예: If a sinner repents, he will go to heaven in the place of hell.

   5. As for (v. 20)

      1. 무엇에 관하여는

      2. 예: As for me, I will love God and serve Him only for the rest of life.

   6. For good/evil (v. 20)

      2. 예: Suffering is not easy to go through, but God allows it to us for good.

2. Dative Verbs (수여동사)

      2. 예: God sent us his Son.

   3. Give (v. 16)

   4. Cf. Provide (v. 21) (전치사 물건 앞에 전치사 with가 있어야 함)

      1. ~에게/~을 공급해 주다.

      2. 예:

         1. God provides us.

   5. Cf. Forgive (v. 17) (두개의 목적어를 취하는 동사)

Writing Using the Grammar

1. 하나님께서 우리에게 큰 은혜를 주셨습니다.

   1. God did us a great favor.

   2. God gave us a great grace.

2. 하나님께서는 그 아들을 우리에게 보내 주시고, 그의 희생으로 우리에게 구원의 길을 열어주셨습니다.

   1. God sent us his Son, and, by his sacrifice, he gave us the path to salvation.  

3. 우리는 죄와 불신으로써 하나님께 악을 행했지만, 하나님은 그의 독생자를 아낌없이 우리에게 주셨습니다.

   1. God did God evil by sin and disbelief, but He gave us His only begotten Son without sparing.  

4. 하나님의 구원의 은혜를 받으세요, 그리고 그 앞에 꿇어 엎드리십시오. 그리하면 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주실 것입니다.  

   1. Receive God's grace of salvation and fall down before him, and He will give you great grace.  

5. 하나님께서는 그를 믿는 자들 누구에게나 모든 것을 공급해 주시고 구원받기에 부족함이 없게 하십니다. 

   1. God provides whoever believes in him with all things that he/she doesn't lack anything for salvation.

6. 우리가 회개하면 하나님은 우리의 죄를 용서해 주십니다. 

   1. God forgives us our sins if we repent. 

7. 하나님은 우리의 죄에 대해 원수로 갚지 않으시고 오히려 선으로 갚으셨습니다.

   1.  God paid us back for our sins not with evil but with good. 

8. 하나님은 우리에게 벌을 주시는 대신 그 아들을 통한 구원을 주셨습니다. 

   1. God gave us salvation through his Son in the place of punishment.

9. 천국과 지옥이 있을지도 모른다고 생각해 보세요. 그러면, 복음을 받아들이게 될 것입니다.

   1. Think it may be that there are heaven and hell, and it may be that you will accept the gospel. 

10. 다른 사람들이 뭐라고 말하든 간에, 저는 하나님을 사랑하고 그분만을 섬길 것입니다.

    1. (Whatever others may say) As for me, I will love God and serve only Him.

11. 하나님은 반드시 복음에 순종한 사람들은 천국에 가고 복음에 순종하지 않는 사람들은 지옥에 가도록 할 것입니다.  

    1. God will bring it about that those who obeyed the gospel go to heaven, and those who don't, hell.  

12. 예수의 이름으로 세례를 받고 그를 닮은 새 사람으로 거듭나십시오. 그리하여 당신이 구원받는 일이 반드시 일어나게 하십시오.

    1. Be baptized in the name of Jesus and be born again to be a new person after Him to bring it about that you will be saved.
