How Do We Look? 우리는 어떻게 보일까?

The Korean number among us is growing, and it will be, as we are fervently reaching out to the growing Korean community around us. As we get more diverse, I want to appreciate what we look like in terms of what the church was supposed to. The book of Ephesians, which teaches about the church, gives us an idea of what the church is supposed to look like. It is based on what Jesus had accomplished through the crucifixion--He broke down the dividing wall of hostility and created one person, who is his church (Eph. 2:14-15). 

The Wall of Religious Traditions
Jesus destroyed the wall of religious traditions among people. In Jesus’ day, Samaritans worshipped in the mountain at Samaria while Jews did in Jerusalem (John 4:20). They were hostile to each other persisting on each other’s religious traditions. However, Jesus taught that it was not what God desired. Jesus proclaimed what God desires is the worship in spirit and truth regardless of places of worship and people who worship (4:23-24). He destroyed the wall of hostility between Samaritans and Jews by teaching them about the right worship. Later through crucifixion, he initiated the one true worship of all people.

The Wall Against Faith
Jesus also destroyed the wall against faith among people. One day a Roman centurion came forward to Jesus and asked to help his servant who was paralyzed (Matt. 8). As Jesus was going to go with him, he said Jesus could just say and his servant would be healed. Jesus was astonished at the faith of the centurion because he was a Gentile. And he declared that there would be many Gentiles who would be saved by faith while many Jews wouldn’t (8:11-12). The Jews, thinking they were in the faith, wouldn’t let Gentiles in, but Jesus destroyed the wall that all could come in. Later, through death on the cross, he became the source of faith and made faith available to all who would believe.

The Wall Of Privilege
One of the things that Jesus destroyed was the wall of privilege among people. It is clear according to the parable of good Samaritan (Luke 10). There appears a Levite, a member of the privileged tribe. The priest also was a highly privileged position. However, they were denounced by Jesus. Ironically, whom Jesus honored was the Samaritan, who had no privilege. It was because of his spirit of love. Jesus honored the man to the degree that he commanded his disciples to do as he had done (10:37). He destroyed the wall of privilege among people by elevating the Spirit of love. Later, he died in the Spirit and put all human privileges under the Spirit.

Do We Look Like The Lord’s Church?
These are just a few examples of the walls that Jesus destroyed by crucifixion. He destroyed the wall of religions tradition, the wall against faith, and the wall of privilege. It was by worshipping in spirit and truth, by faith, and by love, which were all completed by Jesus’ crucifixion. Therefore, the church of Christ shouldn’t have such walls. We don’t have such walls and are united through faith, love, and worship in spirit and truth. This is our look and everyone from any background and ethnicity can comfortably be united in faith, love, and worship in spirit and truth. We are proud of our look as the Lord’s church, and it makes us confident to invite people around us, both Americans or Koreans. 

우리 교회에 한인들의 수가 점점 많아지고 있습니다. 앞으로도 계속 그럴 것입니다. 이런 상황에서 본래 교회의 모습이 어떠해야 하는가에 지금 우리의 자신의 모습을 비추어고자 합니다. 에베소서에 주님의 교회의 모습이 어떠해야 하는가에 관한 한가지가 있는데, 예수님께서 십자가에 못박혀 돌아가심으로써 사람들 사이에 벽을 허물고 한 사람 즉 교회를 세우셨다는 것입니다. 즉 교회에는 그런 벽들이 있어서는 안 된다는 것입니다. 좀 더 구체적으로 몇 가지 예를 가지고 보겠습니다.

종교적 전통의 벽
예수님은 사람들 사이의 종교적 전통의 벽을 허무셨습니다. 사마리아인들은 사마리아에 있는 한 산에서 유대인들은 예루살렘에서 예배를 드렸습니다 (요한복음4:20). 그들은 자신들의 종교적 전통을 주장하면서 서로 적대적이었습니다. 예수님은, 그것이 하나님이 원하는 것이 아님을 분명히 하셨습니다. 하나님은 예배의 장소에 관계없이 신령과 진정의 예배를 원하심을 천명하셨습니다 (4:23-24). 예수님은 이렇게 사람들 사이에 있던 종교적 전통의 벽을 허무셨습니다. 나중에는, 십자가의 죽음을 통해 모든 사람에게 한 예배를 주셨습니다. 

믿음을 가로막는 벽
예수님은 또한 사람들 사이에 있던 믿음을 가로막는 벽을 허무셨습니다. 어느 날 로마 백부장이 예수님께 나아와서 중풍으로 쓰러진 자기 종을 도와달라고 애원했습니다 (마태복음8장). 예수님이 그를 따라 나서려 할 때, 백부장은 말씀만 하시면 하인이 나을 것이라고 합니다. 예수님은 이방인인 그의 믿음에 놀라시며, 많은 이스라엘 자손들 중에 그렇지 못할 자들이 있는 반면, 이방인 중에 많은 수가 믿음으로 구원을 얻을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 유대인들은 자신들은 믿음 안에 있다고 자만하면서 믿음에 대해 이방인들을 멸시했습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 그들이 세운 믿음에 대한 벽을 허물어 버리셨습니다. 나중에 예수님은 십자가의 죽음을 통해 믿음의 근원이 되시고 모든 사람이 믿음을 가질 수 있는 길을 여셨습니다.   

특권의 벽
예수님께서 무너뜨리신 벽들 중 하나가 사람들 사이에 있던 특권의 벽이었습니다. 선한 사마리아인의 비유에서 이를 볼 수 있습니다 (누가복음10장). 비유에는 특권을 가진 레위인과 제사장이 등장합니다. 그러나 예수님은 그들을 힐난합니다. 역설적으로, 예수님에 의해 칭송을 받은 사람은 유대인들이 인정은 커녕 부정하다고 욕하던 사마리아인이었습니다. 그것은 그의 사랑의 정신 때문이었습니다. 예수님은 심지어 제자들에게 그가 했던 것과 같이 하라고 명령할 정도였습니다 (10:37). 예수님은 그렇게 사랑의 정신으로 사람들이 정한 특권의 벽을 허무셨습니다. 그리고 후에 예수님은 그 사랑의 정신으로 십자가에서 희생되심으로써, 모든 인간의 특권을 사랑의 정신 아래 두셨습니다. 

우리는 주님의 교회로 보이고 있나요?
이것들은 예수님이 십자가의 죽음을 통해 무너뜨리신 벽의 몇가지 예에 불과합니다. 예수님은 종교적 전통의 벽, 믿음에 대한 벽, 그리고 특권의 벽을 허무셨습니다. 그러므로, 그런 벽들이 있는 것은 주님의 교회가 될 수 없습니다. 우리도 또한 주님의 교회이기에, 그런 벽들을 허물고 믿음과 사랑 그리고 신령과 진정의 예배로 하나가 된 모습이어야 합니다. 우리 교회가 그런 모습이라는 것이 자랑스럽습니다. 그 모습이 우리로 하여금 한국인이건 미국인이건 자신있게 우리 교회로 초대할 수 있도록 해주고 있습니다.
